From the Preface:The writer has not attempted to do more than give a sketch of the leading events of Washington's career and the influence they exerted upon his activities. His youth was passed in conditions the most favourable for developing sobriety of judgment, touched with a romantic gleam of foresight on the future possibilities of his particular colony. Called early to the public service, he held positions of high responsibility, and fulfilled the requirements conscientiously and at times with high ability. His strength and confidence grew with the calls made upon him. Never seeking recognition and never demanding public favour or reward, he attained to a reputation that has steadily increased as time has passed. As a young soldier, he performed his duty often under trying provocation; as a general, he conducted his campaigns laboriously, with indifferent means and without the glamour of great successes. He gave little evidence of possessing the qualities that make a great commander, hut as general and as President he was a great leader, gathering round him the best counsel and earnest for the public good. He came to represent the idea of union, of nationality, and sought to establish the new government upon a firm foundation. In private life he advanced the methods of agriculture in Virginia, and did what lay in his power to avert the revolution in the economy of a slave-holding community. "Just the facts..." and as boring as the texts they forced us to read in high school. Poorly written. I don't know if this is strictly the author's poor style of engagement, or if it is just this subject matter. In the trash it went.
